Do Rational Demand Functions Differ from Irrational Ones? Evidence from an Induced Budget Experiment

چکیده
Various studies (e.g., Becker, 1962, Ariely et al., 2003) have noted anomalies concerning the relationship between observed demand and the preferences presumed to motivate it. We reexamine these findings using experimental choice data. After separating our subjects’ choices into rational and irrational subsets based on consistency with the axioms of revealed preference, we estimate and compare demand coefficients. Mirroring Ariely et al.’s “coherently arbitrary” choice, both rational and irrational demand estimates exhibit negative price and positive endowment coefficients. However, a comparison of the full set of demand coefficients indicates significant differences between the two, yielding an observable artefact of the preference hypothesis. Relaxing the goodness of fit of the revealed preference test (Afriat, 1987, Varian, 1993) does not alter our findings.

Do People Prefer Irrational Ratios? A New Look at the Golden Section
The Golden Section is proposed to be the preferred ratio in many domains. Starting with Fechner, there were several empirical studies concerning the preference of the Golden Section with inconclusive results. Our main concern is that the Golden Section can neither perceived no produced exactly since it is an irrational number. Therefore, we propose to give a closer look to preferences for ratio...

متن کاملTrustworthiness and Negative Affect Predict Economic Decision-Making.
The Ultimatum Game (UG) is a widely used and well-studied laboratory model of economic decision-making. Here, we studied 129 healthy adults and compared demographic (i.e., age, gender, education), cognitive (i.e., intelligence, attention/working memory, speed, language, visuospatial, memory, executive functions), and personality (i.e., "Big Five", positive affect, negative affect) variables bet...
متن کاملTowards a new model of speculative bubbles: nonparametric test with an application to the Tunisian Stock Index
Bubbles in asset prices have fascinated researchers in finance. Identify asset bubbles, by circumstances, on the stock market has been a growing number of research theoretical and empirical. On a theoretical level, it was assumed that the price dynamics reflect irrational behavior of economic agents and, therefore, should be excluded from a deal with the truly rational economic agents Burmeiste...
